We are completing our third year of homeschooling with my 10 year old daughter (4th grade). Through the last three years, we have completed each of the elementary book groups read aloud. My son, who is now 6, has listened along the way. Planning next year, would you read aloud book group 1 middle school AND book group 1 Elementary? Or, do your children read these books independently? Or, just read middle book group 1 aloud and as my son gains reading proficiency, have the elementary books groups for independent reading?
I’m just trying to figure out how next year will look with a 10/11 year old 5th graders AND a 6 year old (1st grader who has completed Delightful Handwriting and SOME Delightful Reading). I prefer to do as much together as possible. Thank you for any insight.
We do a mix of books across all ages! If the current read is aimed toward my middle kids, the next might be aimed at younger or older. A well written book can be enjoyed by many ages (though the youngest ones may not understand it all, let them play quietly).
We do a mix of them as well (ages 3-14 here). They have often enjoyed books from other age groups! I try to pick a book or two from each age range for the year. This year we read Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Farmer Boy, The Hobbit, Black Ships Before Troy, D’aulaires’ Greek Myths, and lots of picture books. They also have assigned books for history and science at their age level.
We read a mix as well (age4-16). One will be teen appropriate and the next a simple picture book. Even the teens like the odd picture book LOL. And the little kids learn a great deal of “attentiveness”.
Everyone learns that the world does not revolve around them and that they must learn to enjoy all types and genres and age groups. 🙂
