Does anyone have an opinion on any of the books by Lamplighter Publishing? I was wondering if the age ranges they give are on target? Did it have enough action for boys?
I was looking at many. I found a homeshool discount website that has these listed for $4 or so dollars off. Basket of Flowers, Hedge of Thorns, and Little Sir Galahad struck my interest the most. I ordered their catalog and have looked through it, so I saw they give age ranges.
I guess as a “boy mom” I am always thinking that so many of the Lamplighters are more for girls! LOL It just seems like I read a description of so many and think “Nope, mine aren’t going to go for that!”
One other that we have really loved that I did not mention on the previous thread: Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince is FABULOUS, and more for younger boys (my 9yo loved it, my teens aren’t so sure, lol) But I surely loved it! One of the best ones they’ve put out in the last couple of years I think.
So far for us the age ranges have been helpful, but more helpful in my almost-single-gender family has been the recommendations they make for boys vs. girls. Being the only female in the household except for one snake, lol, we really rely on that. By and large my younger kids have done well with books marked for older ages, but my older boys aren’t always crazy about the ones aimed at younger children. I’d NEVER get Teddy’s Button past my 16yo now, in other words, although he loved it at about 10 or so when we read it. And I think my youngest was pretty young–maybe 4 or so–when we first did Sir Knight of the Splendid Way. He didn’t understand all of it, but he did follow enough to play “knight” endlessly for months, lol.
Basket of Flowers is a girl book. Great story but for girls.
Titus of the Cross, Boys of Grit, The Cross Triumphant, Stick to the Raft, Joel of Galilee, Stephen A Soldier of the Cross, Teddy’s Button are all boyish. My dh read us Ishmael and Self Raised and like them a lot. But they are probably in between. They are for teens and up. But those two aren’t about battles or war. It’s a character story.
Titus of the Cross, The Cross Triumphant and Stephen A Soldier of the Cross are WONDERFUL! My son, after hearing Stephen, A Soldier of the Cross at age 4, slept with it under his pillow for a good 8 months. Almost 9, he still is endeared to that book.
I’d say it depends on the boy. The boys at the HS conventions that work the both, are good at helping you make those decisions.
Whether your boys like it may surprise you; it depends on the boy. My son (9) enjoyed Jessica’s First Prayer and Jessica’s Mother. Since the storylines are so strong, my son overlooks the sex of the main character because it’s about the story. They’re having a sale till tomorrow night, BTW. Also, look for the damaged ones at a discount and on Amazon used for less cost.
They also have a Lamplighter Theatre now that can be accessed on their site and listened to a dramatized version every Friday for nothing.
We love every Lamplighter that we’ve ever read – boys and girls. I don’t think you can go wrong with these quality books. Some of my personal faves – Hedge of Thorns (both the picture book and the original), Teddy’s Button, Nobody Loves Me, Boys of Grit series (we’ve this one on audio), Fire in the Sky. My all time favorite of any books – Ishmael, Self Raised and The Hidden Hand (these are for older teens/adults.)
Lamplighter usually has a sale of buy so many and get one free. Their books are of the highest quality, so are a bit more expensive, but they are beautifully bound and well worth it!
