  • Is there just a readers reference categorized by age? I see recommendations for read alouds by grades, (which i am using) but I am looking for books that my child can read by herself, not by me. Hope this makes sense!

    Hi,

I’m assuming you are referencing the CM Bookfinder, right? And if so, if you type into the search box the subject, say “literature” or “history”, and then set the grade level range from say “1st” to “1st”, it will pull books that are appropriate both to read aloud to and be read by children within that grade level/age range. However, you will have to sift through the list to separate “read alouds” from the “read independently” titles. And, of course that will be different for each child, according to their reading ability. I use Amazon and Gutenberg to try to preview the text before buying in order to determine if a title is a “read aloud” or “read independently” book.

If there is another way to do this using the Bookfinder, I’d love to know!

That said, I use the Sonlight curriculum booklists to find age/level appropriate readers. Many of these titles are aon the SCM list as well. That is how I knew that “Minstrel in the Tower” was a read-independently title for my daughter. Sonlight has lists of just “Readers” that you may choose from. It is the only curriculum that I know of that does that. Anyone know if there are others?

It would be neat if the SCM booklist might include another tag to indicate Independent Reading Level…although I’m sure that level would be subjective.

What reading level is your child, and what subjects are you seeking for independent reading? General literature? History? Perhaps we can suggests some good titles here.

My daughter is 7 and is starting to read chapter books. I am looking for general literature and appropriate history. It has been awhile since I have looked at Sonlight, I will look at it again. Thanks for that suggestion.

Thanks to krommama for that list, it looks promising!
