My daughter has always struggled with math. She does not have good number sense. I have gotten some help over the past few years, and I also had her tested by a neuropsychologist. Because of her age, he recommended life skills, including money, time, and my evaluator added measuring. Although I am still working on basic operations (currently working on multiplication), I cannot focus on learning facts (neuro Dr said to table facts and focus on these other things that will help her function as an adult).

I found some books for my daughter to work on now. (Department Store Math and Grocery Cart Math) She really has a difficult time counting mixed coins. Although we will continue working on multiplication and division next year, I would like to find some life skills math books. I know I can find every day things for her to do to learn them, but I like having something to follow and that may give me new ideas. I especially like the Grocery Cart Math, because we actually use it in the grocery store. We did the first lesson on Friday, looking at items in gallon containers and writing prices. Next will be half gallons and discussing difference in costs. It also gets into other types of measurement and then adding 10 items in cart. So, this is really hands on and not just working in a book. If anyone has any suggestions for similar books, please give them. I would appreciate it very much. Math is such a struggle for us.

You might check out the your business math program sold here at SCM. I’ve heard great things about it!

Thank you, Melanie! That looks great! I wasn’t familiar with it. Will definitely be looking into it.

I was wondering if Charlotte Mason’s living math would also work in our situation.

I’m wondering about it for older kids as well. Mine are 11 & 13. 11dd greatly struggles with math while 13ds grasps easily.

I will be starting my son in the CM Living Math and he is 15. I was told by the author of this math, that it would be good for older kids as well.
