I am thinking of getting Life of Fred Fractions for my older son to complete over the summer — kind of a see how it works for us type thing before purchasing Epsilon from MUS which will cost me 4 times as much. He is just over half way through Delta and right on track for finishing up by the end of May.
The thing is my younger son will also be finshing up Delta by the end of June at the rate he is going. He will be 9 in July and just starting 4th in the fall, so young for LOF Fractions if you go by what the LOF website says. I am not sure I want to move him along at the same rate as my older son, so I thought of getting the new Intermediate books and having him go through them first. Then I thought that older ds should maybe go through them first, too — and he could probably finsh the first one in June and then just pass the book along about the same time the younger is fishing Delta. That might keep them one book apart for the better part of the year.
We have read Apples, but none of the other Elemnetary books. Do you think it would be necessary, or should I be able to just jump into the Intermediate books as a transition to the Fractions book? The boys love Fred, and I love that they love it, it’s non-consumable and much less expensive than MUS. Even if I have to buy more than three books a year, it is so much easier on me to spread out the spending.
I’ve also considered using Your Business Math Pet Shop as a once a week thing for next year (LOF 4 days, YBM 1 day).
We are using Life of Fred and have gone through all the elementary ones first – even though alot of it they knew already there was alot they didn’t because it does not cover items in the same order – or way, that other curriculums do (especially the public school system here in England)also, he likes to drop in little mentions of stuff that will come up in pre algebra or algebra and other later books – just names of things and stuff, which I like because when they get to those later books some of the mystery and therefore n some cases ‘fear’ will be removed because they will have touched on it lightly in the past ‘easy’ books. So i would say it’s worth doing all the books – they don’t take long – and if there are chapters that are easy because they already know that stuff – they will go through quickly and they may just find one or two chapters that are ‘new’ – it’s a good practise for them to get used to how to used the fred books – they are unlike anything else I have seen – but my boys love them – we started home schooling 2 years ago , my boys were 7 and 9 – I started them on Apples about 1 yr ago and my oldest is now halfway through fractions, and the younger is on Icecream (He has always struggled and hated math – but Fred has done wonders for Him) In the early days – I had my older boy doing 2 chapters a day to cath up a bit to a more age appropriate level and he had no problem doing it what so ever – and frequently I still get called to the table so they can tell me about what Fred has just done or said
Having said all that – The Fractions and upwards , i believe (I could be wrong), were written first and then they made the elementary books – so originally children would have started out on fractions when they were ready for them and done something else prior to it. We have all the books – which is great because I have a 3yo who one day will start them from the beginning too. I can’t comment on how it will fit compared to your other math program as I have not used it. But we love Life of Fred!!
