Hi all. For those using Life of Fred for youngers, do you have them write out their problems at the end? If so, do you just do it in a notebook or on scratch paper or…. I was thinking a gridded notebook ( think giant graph paper) might work, if such a thing exists.

My 4th grader uses a spiral notebook to answer all questions. He checks his answers and we go over any that were challenging. I have explained to him that he needs a full understanding of them, as he will see them again and if he cheats, he is only cheating himself. He has done well so far, but struggles to remember past concepts if it has been a while.

We do something similar to Wings2Fly. My kids each have a spiral notebook for “extra” math like LOF and others. They use to grab loose sheets of paper, but that was a major pain. I love the graph paper notebook idea, though. I’ve seen people talk about it and seen it online, but never looked for it in a store.

Each of my kid has their own spiral and we are using same spiral through several LOF books. Works for us.

I found this at Miller Pads and Paper:

I wonder if the 1/2 inch blocks would work?

    Thanks for your responses.

My children use the math main lesson books from here. The customer service is exceptional and the books are incredibly high quality and sweet keepsakes. The math notebooks have gridded paper and the covers are blue.

The graph paper could work, but some answers are not numeral or may not require computation. So the student should be comfortable writing out simple, short answers like “ordinal” or “3 feet”. Recently, one assignment was to list the alphabet and name an animal which started with each letter. Another was to list ways to divide a group of students. You can also have the regular notebook paper turned sideways for columns to use for computations. For reference, my son is on book E for Edgewood and had started with Apples, writing all answers in the same notebook.

My sister just put a lined sticky note on each page where there were questions for her son to write the answers, that way there wasn’t need of a separate book.
