I have been going back and forth between Life of Fred and MUS.

I thought I was going to use LOF only for my 1st grader this year but my 7th grader is totally stuck w/MUS, no mater how many times we keep adding and subtracting fractions he just doesn’t get it so he wants to do LOF.

    I’ll see how that goes…

My question is for my 5th grader. If I switch him to LOF how do they learn long divisions? Can you really learn long divisions w/out the repetition and lots of practice? Those of you using LOF did you stop and incorporate more practice sheets until they learned how to do long multiplications and divisions or was it not necessary?

I had started Ice cream for him and it seemed way above his head so I am thinking to start him from the beginning…

The author of LOF says that if they are 4th grade level or below, we should start back at Apples. I decided to try Kidneys (1st in the intermediate series) with my daughter over the summer to see how we liked it before making such an investment(and whether we really needed to go back to the first book). She did very well with Kidneys, although it got quite challenging toward the end. We love the curriculum and I appreciate the approach so much that I just purchased the elementary series last week.. SO we will be going back and doing those books (probably quite quickly but we will see) before continuing on with Liver. HTH

So you don’t know how well it teaches multiplications and divisions yet right?

I might start at apples too since I will be getting the 4 books following that, it will leave me some time to purchase the other ones…

We use Calculadders to drill along with life of Fred for my son.  The reality is there is more advanced mathematics that they need to be able to recall the facts quickly without having to calculate a simple multiplication or division problem (or it will take FOREVER to finish one problem – this I know from experience!).  Once we started Life of Fred, and my son understood the whys and hows of how math works it was easier for him to learn the basic facts because they were no longer meaningless.  LOF helped him really understand and see how Math works and applies to his life but he still needed to drill the basic facts

Specifically about long division….my 10yo got to that part last year in LOF and I remember giving her just a few extra practice problems so she could get it down. I think you really can play it by ear. If your son is reading his books on his own, Check in with him often enough to find out what he might be having difficulty with. You can slow down at ANY time and target specific skills to drill using worksheets. I agree that once the concept is understood, the practice goes better. That’s what I LOVE about LOF!
