Is there a list anywhere of books from Mods 1 and 2 that might be readily available at the library? Our local library sytem isn’t with it yet and plugged into the Bookfinder system software.
If someone has already looked into which ones they could find at the library vs. which ones they had to purchase, I would greatly appreciate their sharing!
Since every library is different, and most people have to pay fees for inter-library loan books, I think most of us just bought the books.
I accessed my local library’s online search feature and just input the titles I was looking for and made my own notes. I was not able to find any of them in ours, so just purchased using amazon and the local used bookstore. I keep a running list in my purse or head and try to look for them at the Friends of the Library sales, yard sales, thrift stores or antique malls.
I did find a really neat book from 1937 called “Once Upon a Time in Egypt” by Frances Kent Gere. The story is set in Ancient Egypt and follows three boys about 10 or 11 yo that are friends – one is the estate owners’ son, the farmer’s son, and the artisian’s son. It takes them on adventures through everyday life in Ancient Egypt. It can be substituted for Boy of the Pyramid, but we really enjoyed both and I wouldn’t want to pick one over the other. 😉
My favorite one is called “Ancient Egypt” by Lorna Oakes & Lucia Gahlin (ISBN # 0-681-32324-8). It is big and beautful with lots of explaination and actual pictures…I have found something about all these topics in this book – real pictures of actual artifacts, good explainations etc. The next one that I really like is the Lost Civilizations book by Time Life called “Egypt: Land of the Pharaoahs” (ISBN # 0-8094-9850-2). It compliments the Ancient Egypt book beautifully. The section on clothing and everday life on page 135-139 was very interesting. =)
Thanks Sheraz for all of this valuable info. I checked out the links too and love the prints. Our library has no charge for interlibrary loans and has a modest fee for out of state loans. Love getting books from out of state~geek here! 🙂
We also have free interlibrary loan for any library in the state, including universities. The only books I can’t always find are ones by independant Christian publishers but that is to be expected I suppose.
Our library has an excellent website with searchable catalog and free inter library loans throughout our state also. I did not purchase ANY books for history last year as everything was available at the library for Mod 4. Mod 5 this year I have one book I need to substitute for. I do usually buy spines since I use them so long.
I recommend taking your list to the library and looking all the books up (hopefully they do have computerized card catalog?) and mark which ones are available and which you need to buy or substitute. You can also mark their location in your notes to find them quickly later in the year.
Also, see if your library does a “teacher” library card. I have one and I can keep my books for 8 weeks and then have two more renewal periods of 4 weeks each. I also have a higher limit, and I can email a list (or call) of books or subject with age level and the librarians will put together a collection for me that I just pick up. Plus I do not get charged late fees 🙂
That sounds like a great library! We do have the computerized search system, so we will look them up from home and then put a hold on them when we are ready to use them. Thanks for the tip about the “teacher card.” I’ll look into that! 😉
Well, here – we have ILL – cost depends on if the library will be charged to borrow it! (On the request, you can indicate a maximum you would pay….) – Everything I have borrowed ILL so far was free, except one that the cost was about $1 less than buying the book! I didn’t borrow that one!
We don’t have “teacher library cards here”… (would be nice) – but we can get a card for the Teacher’s Library! So I have an extra library system to check for books! Loan length is the same though, and harder to renew (and a limit of 1 renewal)…. but no fees for late books (unless declared lost) – you just can’t borrow anymore if there is something overdue. They also have what I’d call “manipulative kits”, as well as things like filmstrips (um, I don’t own a projector), dvd’s, etc. I find this library harder to use though….
We have free interlibrary here, but the late fees are quite high comparatively, and you can’t renew. That coupled with the fact that you can’t really time when you receive the books doesn’t make it a practical option most of the time. I will sometimes request just in order to preview a book before buying, though.
