Misty, it is basically a place for you to “pin” things that you find online that you want to go back to someday. Think of it as an online bulletin board or idea book where you jot down all the great ideas you come across. For instance, I have one called “Ideas for REACH” where I pin things that I find that we can use in our REACH co-op. Look at this and you’ll see what I mean…
I used to make huge lists of things and email them to myself and then keep the emails forever so I could click on the links when I was ready to use them. So for me, Pinterest is wonderful. Yes, you have to have an account to be able to make boards and pin things. Just go to pinterest.com and request an invite if you want an account. It is very helpful if you are someone who already uses the internet a whole lot to get ideas. If you don’t, I say just stay off of pinterest because it can be a huge time-waster. Also, on the main board that you get to when you go to pinterest.com (as opposed to someone’s specific board) there is a lot of garbage that you probably don’t want to see. I just keep myself logged in so that whenever I go there, I only see the stuff I want to see.
You don’t have to have an account to look at the pins on it or to follow the links, but you do have to have an account to create your own categories (boards) to pin them to. You don’t have to have facebook to use pinterest. You can create an account with an email. Using your facebook to link your pinterest account to is cool though because it lets you see what other friends have pinterest accounts and you can “follow” them, or see what they pin.
So what you do is create your account and then “follow” any of your friends that you may think has good ideas, good taste. To follow somebody you just go to that person’s page by clicking their name and then you can either click “follow all” to get updates on everything they pin or you can choose individual boards (categories) of theirs to follow. When you login you are automatically taken to the page with pins of all the people you are following, it updates like facebook in that the newest pins are first on your page and the further you scroll the older the pins are. You can follow anyone, not just people you know.
Oh fun! I really like Pinterest. It is not like Facebook. For me Pinterest has been so helpful. I do limit my time on there like I would any online activity. I try to only pin things I would actually do or make, or curriculum that I’m truly interested in; this way my boards don’t get over-huge and I’m not spending too much time on there b/c I have a narrow focus.
I like the idea bc it would visually organize my bookmarks. I do NOT like the “Request Invite” feature. I did that yesterday and I’m still waiting. This seems a bit ridiculous when all other sites you sign up for grant instant access. I may use it, but this is a black mark to me. Ugh.
Of course, this is a product of the ability to be instantly gratified when doing something online. I realize that. Patience. I’ll practice.
Any chance you could send an invite my way too, Doug? Like Christie, I requested an invite several days ago and still haven’t gotten one, but like the idea of using Pinterest to organize all of the links I have bookmarked…
Thanks, Doug. I realize I’m being ridiculously impatient, but it seems an odd way to get members to join a site unless it’s beta or something.
ETA: I just received your email, but it looks like I’ll have to forego Pinterest. You must have either Facebook or Twitter to sign up and I have neither. Sigh. Oh well, maybe someday they’ll remove that requirement.

I think they started that with beta to help keep the growth manageable. I think they’ve kept it because that kind of thing actually can help a site to grow because you feel like you’re part of the special in-crowd and guarantees you’ll have others to network with right away.

I think my husband is going to take away my pinterest privileges if I don’t stop with all my DIY projects soon. When I ask “Where’s a hacksaw?” his eyes glaze over and he asks what pinterest project I’m up to now. I find so many good ideas 🙂 I’ve made bookshelves out of crates, bookshelves out of gutters, (lots of books!), girls canopies, tutu bed skirts, recipes, DIY hygiene products, etc.
