I am wondering what your advise would be to me, a mom who has 2 girls, (7th and 5th) who do NOT have nice handwriting, or printing. Where did I go wrong here, so I don’t lead the other ones down the wrong path? Work on it over the summer?
Does a 7th grader w sub-par writing still do handwriting as a subject (copywork for spelling wisdom, copy scripture to be memorized>) How many times a week? We gotta get the train back on the tracks here!  🙂

My 5th (I just realized last year, embarassing!) holds her PENCIL wrong. Sorry to admit, I just noticed this. Would you have her indo that bad habit, and retrain? If so, I know wtha twill be hard for her and produce assumingly worse handwriting?

Yes, poor handwriting would = more practice here. I would start over if need be. With those ages, barring any specific difficulties, it shouldn’t take long. I would likely add it daily for 10-15 minutes until improvement is seen and then back off. I’ve never had one who held a pencil wrong, so I’m unsure what I’d do in that case. If they held it wrong, but wrote well, then I’d do nothing, I think.

Buy her some pencil grips to help hold the pencil right. These are the ones we used that Tristan recommended on an older thread:

This is a good price for 6. However, Rainbow Resource carries singles if you happen to be ordering from them.

We normally do copywork, but I gave my ds10 a workbook to help him improve cursive and it helped him. He used it only part of the year. Writing with Power by Christian Liberty Press for Zaner-Bloser.
