Hello. We just finished listening to LEDs Miserable on audio from Focus on the Family. I would like to now show a movie to them. The new one in theaters is not a good fit as my children are 14 and under and not into musicals. Could u suggested a good movie version I ,could request from our library. Thanks Misty
I’ve not ever seen a version I like. Definitely do NOT do the one currently in the theater–your instincts are right, and there are difficulties with it besides it being a musical. I also cannot recommend the Liam Neeson one done some years ago. I have heard good things about the one done long, long ago in the thirties but we aren’t much of a really-oldie film family so we’ve never seen it.
There’s a 1978 version that you could preview. Being that it’s from 1978, it probably won’t make her prostitution life graphic nor make the scummy Innkeepers too…well…scummy-though they were.
And the scum survive, too.
The one from 1935 is with Frederick March and Charles Loughton-two classics. I saw it when I was younger, but can’t remember anything. This one and the one above are at Netflix.
I personally love musicals, as do my children, and I love this musical. The movie version was grand and the voices and emotion excellent. The only downfalls were a couple of scenes added that the musical only implied (it went beyond bawdy) and the gratutitous way they had Javert “hit” when he fell from grace. It’s such a shame, too because the message of love and grace, justice and mercy; among other important messages (wasteful revolutions) is so palpable and needed to be heard.
