Lent/Easter Devotionals?

    Hi all,

Does anyone have any good suggestions for some kind of family-friendly devotionals to use during the weeks leading up to Easter?  Last year we used this by John Piper weekly during Lent: http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/articles/lenten-lights, and then used a set of “Resurrection Eggs” with our kids to go through the Easter story during Easter week.  We’d like to do something similar this year, but my husband would really like to have something that would have daily readings rather than weekly.  He’d like to implement something in the weeks leading up to Easter that is akin to what we do with our advent devotions at Christmas time…but since we are from an evangelical, non-liturgical background I’m not really sure where to start looking for something.

    Thanks for any ideas,

We use Resurrection Eggs too, and I’ve heard the book Benjamin’s Box is a good choice to add to them. There was a craft/devo going around BlogLand last spring…I think it was called Calvary Hill, we made one, but did not do devotions to go along with it. A google search might bring something up. I’ll see what I can find, and get back with you.

*Have you checked Ann Voskamp’s blog, A Holy Experience? She is very liturgical/church calendar, and I bet she has something you could use…or atleast a link to something.

OK, just bumping this up, in case anyone else has ideas! We are SO excited abou the Ytreeide book, “Amon’s Adventure”!

But still, I am looking or a daily devotional as well. Ideas anyone?

We, too, are so excited for Ytreeide’s latest Amon’s Adventure! I’m assuming its set up the same as his others, which have a daily devotion after each reading.

Hey, a question for those of you who like the Ytreeide books – I’ve been looking at samples online and trying decide if this would be a good fit for our family for this year or not.  Can anyone give me a good idea about the age group that this might be best for?  I’m wondering if it would work out well for us this year (our oldest is 5.5 and she is really the target child – I also have a baby and a toddler who just ‘tagalog’ at this stage)…or if it might be better to wait another couple of years to get the most out of it.  CBD has it listed for ages 4-8 and Amazon has it listed for ages 9-12.

Any thought for those of you who have used and enjoyed his books before?

    Thanks,
    Jen

Jen, we’ve read all the Ytreeide books for Advent. We started reading them when ours were around 6. I’m sure they will get more out of them when they are older, but I see no sense in holding off since you can repeat the books or continue with the next in the series the following year.  They never get boring and it seems something new in the story and/or devotion stands out every year. My oldest 15 still loves the books, and even my youngest 3 enjoys listening in. If anything you & your dh will find pleasure in them, I know we do. The devotions are very encouraging. I truly hope this new one for Lent is as good as the others. I’m anxiously waiting to get started on it. God Bless You! ~ Heather

Thanks Heather – that helps!  I’ve heard many good things about the Advent ones from various sources too and I’m glad to know they are the kind of stories that appeal to all ages.  =)  We haven’t yet come across anything else that I like better for Lent this year so I think we’ll go ahead and give this one a try. =)

I am looking forward to this book too!  I wanted to mention that Nancy Le DeMoss is starting a series for adults on March 9th (I think) using the book the Incomparable Christ to focus us on Christ.  I’m really looking forward to it!

Just wanted to make sure you all know that anyone can use Ytreeide’s books. We, too, are evangelical, totally non-liturgical and have been very blessed by them. Thanks Pollysoup for sharing. Are you referring to the book by Oswald Chambers? If so, the series is going to be great! Jen, I looked into the Desiring God devotion by John Piper & think we’ll add that in too; I’m glad you mentioned it!

    Blessings all! ~ Heather
