I was curious if anyone knew of a online source for devotional readings to do with kids over lent? Or, any good books that I could spend the next several weeks reading with my kids preparing their hearts for Easter. What kinds of activities/books do you do with your children during this season?

    All ideas/recommendations are welcomed! ?

    Thank you!

We are doing a family 40 days 40 bags plan as a family, doing cleaning to simplify our home, remove excess garbage, and also Almsgiving (many bags will be donation items).

I plan on doing this activity with the children: 40 days of Prayers:

As for books, we read a mix of secular and Christian Easter books. Some of our favorite Christian ones are (granted my children are young, so they’re geared towards younger children):

The Flowering Cross by Beth Ryan

The Easter Story by Carol Heyer

The Story of Easter by Gwen Ellis

Easter is for Me! by Dandi MacKall

The First Easter by Carol Heyer

The Story of Easter by Patricia Pingry

Bright Easter Day by Julie Stiegmeyer

We are doing a lent tree (made with a vase and twigs) and some homemade ornaments that you hang each day (except the Sabbath) each week up until Easter.  My friend, Andrea, has a blog with details and pics!http://www.theyoungfamilyfarm.com/preparing-for-lent-inviting-more-of-christ-in-your-home/

And I am editing this post to add that we are not Catholic so we don’t observe it probably the same way, but we simply read a scripture each day and hang our ornaments and remain mindful that this journey is leading to the cross and the resurrection!  We talk about how we are working our way through God’s story (the Bible).  We remember where it all began, with God before there was nothing, than The Fall and so on!  We are showing the history and our need for a Savior!  It is a way to be mindful and prepare for Easter and what it all means!

I think we’ll be reading Amon’s Adventure.  It’s in the Jotham’s Journey series.  We’ll probably get out some Easter picture books as well.  Some we’ve enjoyed are The Very First Easter (Paul Meier), The Parable of the Lily, The Tale of the Three Trees, and the Arch books.

Some activities my DC have enjoyed have been making resurrection cookies (or resurrection rolls).  There are Bible verses to read that tie all the ingredients with the Easter story.  After baking, the cookies are hollow like the empty tomb.  Resurrection rolls are similar, but they only have 3 ingredients, making it a better choice for younger children.  They also like making the traditional lamb cake for Easter.

Another thing we do is choose a Lent hymn or two (followed by an Easter hymn) for our hymn study.

I recently started a small collection of Ideals magazines. They have many poems and short stories we read leading up to Easter. They still publish a Christmas and Easter edition, available on Amazon. I’ve also picked up older editions in antique stores for very low cost.
