The recent interest in lending libraries has been so exciting for me!! I’ve been amazed at how God is opening the flood gates for this ministry. We are often asked, ‘Where in the world can I find a library like yours????” Parents are desperately looking for wonderful books to enrich their children’s education and it’s becoming increaasingly difficult to find them in the public libraries.
If you are in any stage of opening a library, from prayerful to operational, would you mind listing your state or region? You could either list it here, PM me or join the homeschool library yahoo group and list it there. We have a directory on that loop that lists libraries present and future. Also, Michelle Miller would love to add you to her website in a listing she keeps for families looking for living books libraries. Also, if you join the library loop, you can discuss all things library with others who are doing this. You can also find out more about the library conference to be held in Abingdon, VA in late June. I know it would be a hike for many of you but it would be SO worth it! I’ll be involved in that conference as well.
Blessings on your journey. It has been a blessing to me!
I am considering opening one sometime in the future – if I can get my dh’s blessing, that is… He is not into books (not that he doesn’t like to read, but he considers collecting books “clutter”). So someday, I really, really hope to do it. I am in MN. I am also on the Yahoo group (I LOVE that group!), but I can’t get to VA. 🙁
Hi Sara! I didn’t know you were on that loop! I’ll start praying for your library-yet-future. I am in the beginning stages of opening one…very, very beginning stages…lol
This is great, ladies! 3littlegirls, would you mind sharing the state or region you’re in? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to at LEAST have a few in every state. I’m in East Tennessee, but TN is a long state. We could do with a few more. I have people who drive about an hour and a half each way so your reach may be more vast than you imagined.
I didn’t know you were, either! LOL Thanks for the prayers. I’ll keep yours in my prayers, as well! Whereabouts are you? (You can PM instead, if you’d rather.) So far on the group I think I am the only one in MN. And the other moms in my co-op are ecstatic that I’m even considering doing one. I guess that means there’s a need? 😉 I really hope I can do it sooner than later – before all those other kids in my co-op grow up without a living books library! Not that there won’t be others, but still – I know and love the kids in our co-op right now, and they deserve the best of the best. 🙂
I’ll be praying for you, too, Sara. I’m so thankful that my husband is completely on board. In fact, he came upstairs from the library a few days ago and asked if I would consider expanding the library!! The library is in a finished apartment in our basement consisting of a large, all-purpose room, a bathroom and a “bedroom.” I’ve been using the other room as a book repair/catch-all place since I opened. He wants me to clean it out so we can fill it with bookcases. I figure I can shelve several thousand more books in there.
However, although he never told me I couldn’t do the library, he never really understood the impact until a couple of years ago. Now he’s a huge believer in what we’re doing and is constantly trying to make sure I can add to our collection. Keep looking up! If it’s God’s will, it will come.
I am just starting on the journey. I have many books to collect before being able to actually start lending and advertising about what we are doing in our community. I live in a smallish cabin in North Georgia Mountains in a small community. I so wish I could attend the conference but it is just to far for now. Robin I was looking at where you live hoping that, which is somewhat closer to me but still 4 hours, so that I could visit one day and look at your operation. I have looked at software for small lending libraries but am interested in seeing what you use. My husband is completely on board which is a true blessing. Robin, thanks so much for all your encouragement and information about this endeavor.
You are more than welcome to visit anytime. The conference is only an hour and a half from me if you decide to try it. Let me know. We’re an hour or so from the Smoky Mtns. so maybe you can plan a side trip.
I talked with my husband last night about this and he gave me an incredulous look and asked, “WHY would we EVER want to do that?” I reminded him of all the many, many times I’ve complained that the library doesn’t have what I needed. Oh, I’ve complained of that SO MANY times. We almost always end up buying the books because I can’t find what I want. A look of understanding came across his face and he said, “So we’d be doing this as a service, so other people can use the books the libraries don’t stock anymore…..okay……” We’re still trying to figure out logistics and we’ll take it slowly, getting the books ready and cataloged and labeled and such. We also need to build some more bookcases – anyone have plans for cheap, easy bookcases for non-handy people????? We probably won’t open for at least another year. But I’ll be hitting lots of book sales and working on my own collection and we’ll see where that takes us. I’m thinking I’ll also make curriculum available (as my youngest finishes with various math, spelling and what have you) but won’t go out and purchase full curriculum if we won’t use it as a family. Perhaps buckets of toys and learning tools as well – think Zoobs and blocks and pattern blocks and such. So many things to think about, while still teaching school, planting the garden and organizing our new home. Oh, and sleeping.
Something else to consider is this: for now, I am simply making my books (the ones I already buy) available to the gals in my homeschool group. I am not advertising or anything. So I’m organizing them, getting them ready and I figure if I never loan out a book, it will benefit my family to have all the books more organized and in a database so I can find what I need more easily. Beyond that, I’m just praying and I’ll see what the Lord decides to do with it. 🙂
Crazy4boys…we bought some bookshelves from Borders when they went out of business in our town last year. They were very reasonable. I only wish we would have gotten there sooner so we could have had a better selection. You may look around online and see if any places of business are closing down…you may be able to get some bookshelves that way. Also, I know Jan Bloom’s husband provides instructions on how to build simple, affordable bookshelves. You may check their website…
That is SO wonderful! It really is a tremendous ministry. Maybe you can come to the library conference this summer?? Make sure you join the library loop if you haven’t already. So much good discussion there about doing this crazy thing.
Jan’s bookcases are simple to make, and I make mine similar to hers. I cheat and have Lowes cut the wood so it is straight…lol. I have been giving this library idea some thought as well for a while. I am in MO and know of several families here that are using or trying to use living books and or CM methods.
I am SO frustrated with our library selections…I really do try to buy all my books so that I am prepared and ready for my kids. We just moved and my husband helped me make more bookcases again…he is as bed as I am sometimes about books. =)
I am looking forward to going to GHEA convention in May to the used book sale. Normally I just look for our needs but now that has all changed. I will be looking for living books to add to the library collection.
Thus far I haven’t been able to get to the Bloom’s workshops, and I don’t see anything available online from them. I think I’ll just have to bungle my way through a few of them! I’m always looking on Craigslist and book sales and store closings and such. I need to pace myself and make sure I stay within the budget we’ve made. It will be a huge blessing just to have my own collection organized as I often can’t find what I need.
I don’t think I’ll make the conference as it’s a 17 hour drive and most likely my husband will be deployed then. Perhaps next year I’ll be able to fly there….or take a family road trip and explore the surrounding areas.
My boys are very excited about the idea and are volunteering to go to booksales and help me find “really good books”.
I already loan books in our immediate co-op and small Homeschool group with books labeled and a written note on the calendar. We all meet weekly and monthly and some books already have waiting lists. 🙂
