I’m using the recommendations from reading reflex…with the explode the code A, B, and C books. But I am not pushing the writing yet…I dot the letters in and let him copy them. He JUST turned four. He LOVES the explode the code books. He goes around the house thinking of all the words that begin with the letter we are learning. He sort of collects them and brings them to me…Mommy, what about four, does four start with (and he makes the sound for f= ‘f’)…and I’ll say yes, four does start with ‘f’ and he’ll light up and say well then mommy so does five, five starts with ‘f’…I am loving it. One day I lost count of the words he ‘collected.’ 🙂 The A,B, and C books are just at his level. He is so proud of himself and seems to be making a lot of connections for himself.

I agree, teach when they are ready. That said. My daughter was begging to be taught, but I had to wait as she was speech delayed. Can you imagine teaching reading, when she would say ite for light, kite, sight, bite, etc.

Or ee for me, see, bee, three, etc.

sometimes I only got the middle of the word as the end and the beg would be left off. And just as she graduated from speech, I was pregnant with number 4…but now she is doing so well as we go through reading reflex…which i LOVE.

my son is a bit speech delayed (not nearly as much–he only leaves off the beg of the word)…so you can imagine my joy as he ‘collects’ his words that have a particular beginning sound–and actually says them after ONE lesson (a couple of pages) for a letter in explode the code!
