First, I want to introduce myself. I am InHisGrip on another forum, but noticed there is another InHisGrip here. 🙂 (good to be there, huh?) I have three children – ds, almost 12; dd, 8 and dd, 5. This will be our third year home-educating. I incorporate many CM methods in our home, but there are many more I hope to add as we go along. I’m excited about a CM forum where I can ask all of my questions!
Secondly, I was wondering if some of you could post what your learning curve time was with the SCM organizer. I am going to sign up for the free trial, but really can’t until we get back from a trip. In the meantime, I’m just curious as to what others’ experience has been when first starting with it.

For USING the Organizer, I really don’t think there is any learning curve at all. For setting up the schedules, and entering in books, there is a little bit. I really, really recommend first, finding out what books you will need to enter and getting that done. THEN, make sure your schedule is worked out on paper, that you know what you are going to cover and about how quickly you hope to do that—if you do not have Sonya’s Planning Your CM Education, then in the blog post archives, there is a series there with I believe some of the forms. I’ve found those VERY useful. If I have it all thought out ahead of time, then the entering and setting up goes very quickly, I find. If I don’t yet really know what I want to do, then it’s harder.
Thanks, Bookworm, for the welcome and the response regarding the SCM Organizer. I will be checking out the planning information soon. That is the biggest challenge for me as I am not a planner by nature.
I will say that even if you aren’t a planner using the planner is easy and very useful. I love to plan but don’t always follow my plans. I’m just too spontaneous and a “fly by the seat of my pants” type of person. So it has been good for me to plan out the general things I want to accomplish with my kiddos, the books I want us to read and the other resources that I have for the coming year..but I sort of cheat..instead of planning what day I am going to do what resource I enter them all for M-F except for read alouds with dad..that is a S-S entry. So every resource comes up every day so I always have it just incase we do that resource that day..We may not use a resource for a week or two but whenever we do it is always there for me to click “worked on” or “completed”.
There are some resources that I haven’t even entered specific chapters or lessons..For instance, Math I just entered 150 lessons but didn’t put any title for each lesson..I just mark it as completed each day that we do something from our math curriculum. So on the reports it will show that we did 150 math lessons but we will have our Math notebooks to show what all we covered this year.
I don’t know if any of that will help you but I thought it might be encouraging to hear that even if you aren’t a planner the SCM planner is a great tool to keep you on track or to keep track of what you are doing.
I do nearly the same thing as Shelly. I enter most things M-F as well and check it off when we get to it. I have many things listed under math and grammar and I try to hit one of those things each day.
I think the SCM organizer is WONDERFUL for the “fly by the seat of your pants” types (me!). I think it makes me both spontaneous and organized at the same time.
