is any one using learnables spanish

the very beginning when it flashes pictures on the screen or shows them in a book while listening to a cd—does it show the written word?  i am hoping not.  does anyone know?  is there an immersion program that doesn’t show the written word until after some serious mastery like cm recommends?

    thanks jo

I recently got the learnables German (an OLD copy – book and TAPES).

The pictures do NOT have the written word / words.

The program teaches you to recognize the numbers 1-10 in the language… after that it uses that to tell you which lesson / what picture to look at.

I had a look at their site online, and a sample lesson…. and it looks like it works the same way (except it also highlights the picture).  In my book the pictures are black and white… on the sample lesson they have been coloured.  Some of the pictures were a little updated in style.

I think it uses the same pictures for all the languages (but could be wrong.)

I’m debating using it…. it looks like the lessons are about 30 minutes long, which seems very long to me…

do you think you could cut the lesson in half?

what would make that not work.

i think my children would love it

and though i am NOT fluent…i studied foreign languages as my minor…particularly spanish…and i would love it!

    thanks for responding

Yes, if I use it I will be planning to cut the lessons in half (or maybe even into 3…)

We have been doing German for a while (using a variety of things) – so I mainly want to see if it will add to our process or not.

You might like this free video series (They have French, German, and Spanish) as well.  I don’t think there is enough for it to stand on its own, but my kids enjoy them.

The general premise (I watched the first video of each language) is a few children get the chance to learn the language from a native speaker (in German it is at her house…) and we basically see the lesson which is an immersion lesson.    There are also some bits which show some pictures and stuff that does have the word written with it, but the vast majority is conversation.

Okay, suzukimom, thanks a lot!!! Tongue out  I decided to check out the First Step auf Deutsch video “Guten Tag” from the site you recommended….and now I can’t get that song out of my head!  (Guten tag….guten tag….guten tag, mein herr, guten tag….)

I do like the looks of it for my younger kids (10 & 11). I was going to just have the 13yo start Spanish this fall, but maybe we’ll try these videos this summer and see if the youngers would like to add in foreign language.
