    Hi Y’all,

I am putting together my ‘wish-list’ for next year’s curriculum and am seriously considering The Learnables. Those of you that have used that, did you purchase the CD-ROM along with the Reader, or just the CD-ROM. If you also purchased the Reader (wich apparently comes with audio CDs, too), did you actually use it? I’m trying to figure out how necessary that part of the program is.

BTW, we have used the free online program from knowitall.org and ds loved it. He recently asked to do that again, so I’m thinking we’ll re-view the videos over the summer after we finish our current program. 🙂

    Thanks!

I ordered the Learnables for first year German for my girls 2 months ago.  We love it.  They have already used the knowitall videos (I can’t think how many times we’ve been through those, the girls just love those corny videos!!) and I needed to take the next step.  I have the CD-ROM with the Reader….all the reviews I found at the time seemed to indicate that the Reader was the second “part” of the first year.  In other words, the girls are listening (no repeating of words which is hard for them since they love to copy what they hear 🙂  ) to the CD-ROM, and doing the lesson reviews after each unit.  Once we’ve gone through all of the units, then we are supposed to use the Reader.  Atleast this is how I understand it’s to be used.  I was able to find it on special for around $75 on the Homeschool Buyers Coop.  It’s a free membership to join and that allows you to get the deals.  I didn’t want to buy a partial year and then have to go back and pay shipping twice for the second part of the curriculum for our year.  I am a native speaking German and I love that the speaker on the CD-ROM has a REAL German accent, kwim? My girls are trying to use their new words whenever they can.  It introduces words in the manner in which you would learn any native language as an infant/toddler.  I find it incredibly interesting to watch my girls take the lesson review tests b/c it is showing me that they really hear and understand it!!  I am so far absolutely thrilled with this program.  I think the price is also fantastic 😉  But that was just a bonus!  Good luck with your decision making! 🙂

We use it too – I was confused about your question (I didn’t realize what the “Reader” was until Monika explained it,ha!) bc we only purchased the CDROM. We’ll be getting the workbooks or readers or whatever they’re called once we finish the CD, which should be soon (especially since I’ve found again the ever-lost German cdrom). I totally agree with Monika – I love the program and the kids are learning a ton!

Since we always seem to have something wrong with our computer, we just went with the book and audio cd. There is also a workbook that you do after the cd’s. Basicallly the book (if you dont get the cd roms) is a bunch of pictures, no words. We are really liking this program! Very easy to use!! Just pop in the cd and go.

    Hope that helps!

I wanted to add that my girls are ages 8 and 5…just thought I’d include this since I found it very useful to know what ages the reviewers were teaching when I was researching the different programs. I believe the youngest suggested start age is 7 for this program, but I really think you will know your kids best. My 5 year old does just as great as her big Sissy 🙂

Younger kids usually pick up on languages much quicker.  Part of it is how their brains are wired, part of it is that they are not as self conscious about pronouncing something wrong.  I enjoy learning languages, but I always feel intimidated speaking them around others.

Thank y’all so much. That was very helpful. I just couldn’t figure out how the reader worked with the CD ROM. My ds just turned 9, but reading has been a slow process for him.  So maybe by the second half of the year he’ll be ready for the reader. That sounds like it will work well. Thanks again!  🙂
