I got this with the All-Day Seminar DVD’s and it is just what I needed. We are now all working on the habit of instant obedience for 6 weeks. It is going to be so much easier because all the children committed to working on this one thing for the duration.
All I can say is that my missing the habit portion of CM early on was a really bad mistake. 🙁
I just watched the DVD today while the kids napped. I have been reading my way through the book for a few weeks, but I think the DVD was a great starting off spot for me. Now I am going to go back and use the book as a reference when we work on the individual habits. I think I am going to try this method on ME too — pick one habit and work on it for 6-8 weeks and see if I can make some headway on Mom. I am just trying to decide which to start with. There are a few I need to work on. 😉
For the kids I will begin with attention or obedience. Not sure which one yet.
Caroline – Do you have any techniques you want to share for the instant obedience habit? Mine kids are almost four and just turned two.
Yes, I have the book and have been reading it and mulling it over since it arrived.
I decided we needed to start with obedience because I get the “what?” look all the time after I ask them to do something. With my little girl (4) I am using the CM technique of trying to diffuse the situation before she boils over into frustration. Mostly, I am attempting to only ask of her what I know she can do comfortably, AND make sure I get down to her level and look her in the eye. So far so good on that one.
With my older boys we made contracts. We all discussed the benefits of instant obedience: leads to good character, can save your life, etc. Then they all committed and signed off on it. I told them if they ignored my or didn’t obey right away that I would just pause and smile. Of course, my duty is to make sure that I keep them from boiling over into a state not easily recovered from. Today I asked my son to go pick up sticks in the yard when he wouldn’t stop fighting with his sister. He happily trotted off and forgot the fight–gotta love Charlotte!
I can’t wait to get some real life application ideas from Sonya herself! She is coming to my church to do a workshop on Laying down the rails and Reaching your child’s heart. I’m hoping it will help my summer go, Oh so well!
