I’m using the Laying Down the Rails for Children this year, and I absolutely love it!  I have a question, though.  At the end of each 4-6 week habit training session, the book calls for a celebration or celebration ideas.  What would those be?  I can’t necessarily think of a celebration that would celebrate self-control, or obedience, or truthfulness, etc.  Any ideas?

    Thanks!

<p style=”text-align: left;”>My boys always liked the story called “The Boy and the Nuts,” by Aesop. It’s on page 46 of The Book of Virtues but it’s very short so I’m sure you could find it online. It’s a sweet little story about self-control. You could read that and celebrate with a carton of fudge nut sundae or butter pecan ice cream.</p>

So interesting. I haven’t used laying down the rails before. Are there any habits you’ve been practicing this whole time? What comes to my mind instantly is when I was teaching my children to eat healthier. I allowed them one piece of candy per week. But I imagine this is not exactly going to be applicable.

Maybe since they’ve been learning obedience that can be granted a special bit of ‘freedom’ as a reward for obedience.

We have just done this once so far… But we had a family supper with a meal I knew they particularly liked, and I recognized each child for some specific incidents that I wrote down (I gave them immediate feedback of appreciation also and a “best behavior”card) as I observed them, and then I allowed them each to choose something from a little collection of inexpensive gifts that I knew they would like (books, stickers, stationery, art/craft supplies, neat pencils) for each best behavior card they had. I have a budget of $8/mo for this and collected for about three-four months before we had our supper, but now I have a selection I can easily keep going and sustain one supper every month or two.  I actually have a couple of more expensive things (think Playdough gumball/candy maker) in there that I allowed them to have just for that weekend, and now they are back in my basket until I see some new things to recognize them for and we do it again. This worked well here… Kids loved it, and it wasn’t much extra work for me to pull it off!
