We are going to do Latin this year.  My kids are not thrilled.  I am.  I took five years of French in my school years and one year of Latin.  i aced the Latin; I loved it and found that I learned more vocabulary and grammar in one year of Latin than I ever did in 12 years of Enlgish in public school.  I want my kids to get excited and feel successful.  However my funds are EXTREMELY limited.  So.  I am looking at Getting Started With Latin, which has great onine reviews.  But it seems like the kids learn so….little….by the end of the book.  I like the looks of Latin for Children, but it seems like a lot…my dd who is 13.5 and very wordsy and bright would do great with it.  My son is 9 and a great reader, but not super “wordy” – though he loves patterns and puzzles, etc. I suspect GSWL would be great for my DS, and L4C would be great for my DD, but I can’t afford both.  thoughts?

side note:  I have three more coming up, dd6.5, ds4, ds2.5 – anything I can use another time would be great.  I also saw a set of Latin in the Christian Trivium on Ebay…wondering if i should bid?  It that way too much to start with?

We used Latina Christiana, and we liked it. I have heard from my friends that Latin for children is amazing. I could not afford it at the time and I got LC really cheap used, so that’s what we have. We worked through at our own pace last year and are still about 10 lessons from the end. I will tell you no matter which one you pick, you are right that latin is important. My girls scored out of this world on their testing in language just because we had don english from the roots up and followed it with LC. They knew what words meant even though they had no previous experience with certain words on the test all because they knew that latin/greek root. Whatever you choose will help!

Hi!  I have not myself seen Latin for Children but have been told it is similar to Spanish for Children, which I have used and like.  You are right–the Getting Started with Latin is less content than other programs.  It IS solid for what it does cover, however.  With a such an age span, you will have to  make a choice between the two.  You can either give your daughter a little less content than she is capable of handling, OR you can give your son a little more content than he might be ready for.  If you can only get one, you will need to decide.  I do think a 9yo could handle LwC OK.  If you have to spend a little more memory time or move a little more slowly then it would be OK.  How many more years of school are you planning with your older child?  You’ll have to consider where you want her to be when you are done–do you envision her having high school credits in Latin?  How many?  That might affect your choice.

I am a big fan of Latin in the Christian Trivium myself, HOWEVER it is much more expensive than the two programs you’ve mentioned, AND it will still move pretty quickly for your son.

Bottom line, I think either of these could work for you–you just need to consider which need you want to meet first.  Another option is to go with LwC for your daughter, and simply wait some time before beginning it with your son.  They won’t be “together” but this might be difficult to achieve through high school years, anyway.

We did GSWL last year with dd8, and it was a great start for her as well as me, as I never studied Latin before.  On the GSWL site, Mr. Linney has a free Latin program, Linney’s Latin Class, with free downloadable lectures to be used as a sequel to GSWL.  I don’t know what the reviews are like for this, but it might be an option for you if money is tight.  Here’s the link:  http://www.linneyslatinclass.com/

    Take care,
