Bumping this up – I’ve read at least one positive review of Latin in the Christian Trivium on this board, but I am still curious if anyone has used Latin Alive! and how it has worked for them.
Bumping. I know Michelle (Bookworm) loves LitCT, but am curious about other opinions. I only know roots, not actual Latin so it needs to be fairly self teaching. I am debating online classes with both LA or LitCT for dd14 for 9th.
We just started using Latin Alive, after using Latin for Children last year. The first semester my son did Sign Language, but we are back with Latin this semester. The Latin Alive moves fairly fast, and I would be lost if I had not followed along last year with my kids. That being said, however, it could be done fairly independently, if the student had the teacher’s guide to check answers. Throughout the lessons on the DVD, the instructor will prompt the student to stop the DVD, complete the an activity, and then check it with the teacher’s book. Sometimes, though she will have the student complete the activity and then start the DVD again and will check the activity right on the recording-it varies. I have gone through a teaching DVD with the same instructor who teaches the Latin Alive course and she is very good and knows her stuff very well. In fact, she co-authored the Latin Alive book. She has taught in private schools for years as well, so she has a few tricks that she passes along. I do think Latin Alive is a very good program-I am just slow with foreign language and would truly be lost in any course!! If you have other specific questions about the program, I am willing to answer, or try to answer. I do not have any experience with the other program so…I really can’t compare them.
Thanks, Pam. That with Bookworm Michelle’s input is most helpful. I decided that I would show dd14 and let her decide since she will be taking it and I think both options would work well. She chose Latin Alive, so we are registering for that.
