Language Arts Question

I have an upcoming 3rd grader who does not like to read or write. I don’t think she has the confidence and can do well reading if she really tries but still struggles and doesn’t want to read aloud most times. I am not sure which suggested Language Arts to try…Track A or Track B. Her handwriting is really good, but she just still struggles with spelling. So a part of me thinks she would do well with starting to learn cursive. This will be our first year doing CM and I would love to try the suggested curriculum on SCM. And I have been worried with notebooking and written narration if she would struggle more and be turned off by it but I am really hoping this will be the answer to get her more excited and willing. Any advice?

    Thanks!

    Hi Amy! Welcome. 🙂

Charlotte Mason didn’t have children write their narrations until they were about 10 and then she started them slowly.

In 3rd grade, writing would consist of copy work. Though Charlotte Mason’s students did keep notebooks, most of them were not started at such a young age.

Oh! Shows how much I know about CM. Haha! I am still learning. This Forum has been a great help. I just bought the Charlotte Mason Companion and hope to dig into it this week as well. Well, this makes me feel so much better as I was worried about her writing/spelling ability at her age. She is 8. Has anyone used Spelling Wisdom and really liked it? Thanks!

Another question…so if Charlotte Mason recommended written narration around the age of 10 then is she too young for Spelling Wisdom? Or would it be more copywork for her? Thanks!

She could start learning cursive now.  I start my kids with print in K and they start cursive in grade 2, learning formations first while doing print copywork still.  Some start with cursive first.  You can use Spelling Wisdom for transcription copywork, where they copy word for word and not letter for letter.  They can learn spellings and punctuations in this way.  But I would do that just at the first part of book 1 to get them started on it and then transition into dictation at age 10.  So about age 9 1/2, start SW with transcription copywork.
