Whatever happened to Learning Language Arts Through Literature? That used to be touted as CM. Any opinions? If you ladies could share your pros and cons on that plus Applied Grammar, and Queen’s, I would appreciate it.
I think it was Misty who told me about Queens. I am so thankful for them. They are straight and to the point. They are short and enjoyable.
But, with that said if you are a grammar geek you will not like Queens. But, we are not grammar geeks and are thankful that our children can speak clearly and dont see a huge need in them learning how to diagram.
Agreeing with Shanna re: Queen’s. We just finished our first year of Queen’s and it is exactly what we have been looking for. The copy work books are excellent also.

We use LLATL and absolutely LOVE it!!!! I do like the Original Edition better than the Current Edition with the workbooks. I like it better because it’s more CM/Beechick oriented than the newer ones.
Nedra, do you use Queen’s for your older one? I’ll have an 8th grader this year, and we still need to cover some things, but I’m not sure if I want to use Analytical Grammar or not.
I’m most likely going to be using Queen’s for my 5th grader.
I am using Queens with my 8th grader. We are currently doing the first of the Secondary books. We will continue all the way through the High School books.
Shanna, when you use Queen’s Language Lessons, are you still doing spelling and copywork separate? It was my understanding that copywork is to be done everyday, and LL only covers it every few days.
What other things are you doing with your 8th grader (history, lit, etc.)?
Agreeing with Inhisgrip and her “wowzers” comment!
I’ve been thinking this past year how “well rounded” our school is (have been using MFW) and after reading around the SCM website more, re-reading Andreola and For the Children’s Sake, I’m starting to see many gaps.
2 days ago I wrote my own “book” basically…just writing down all my thoughts on everything…my goals now look more like your list!
How do you do it? And how many children do you do it with??? I’m thinking it is, of course, doable…but it will be a BIG change!
Kathi, we use MFW this year, too. The history felt very segmented to me. I also want to add in Truthquest to our studies this year – Module 1. I really loved CM’s way of having everyone be done by noon. It would be different for us, because my hubby works evenings, so ours might be a little separated. He gets up at 10:30 and that is our family time. Feeling a little bit stressed about it but trying to relax and know that God loves me and is in control and knows exactly what we should do this year..
I started my son on LL for the Secondary Child in February as I started to transition to a more CM approach. My son is 9th grade. He just loves this book! I also have a couple of copywork books from Queen, and the days where copywork is not assigned in LL, he does his copywork from those books. I’m going to start doing some of his copywork as dictations soon.
I wanted more writing instruction, and really wanted to keep the gentle, relaxed CM feel, so I am using Write With the Best. My son really likes this, too, and the two programs seem to mesh together really well…I’m very pleased.
So do you use the LL as apposed to the Jr. Analytical Grammar? I saw the Jr book and plan to use it, it just looks SO BORING! I like the look of the LL and I also checked out Write with the best, it looks great, but a little messy? The format seemed a little cluttered, is it easy to figure out what you’re supposed to do each lesson?
Also how long does LL & Write with the best take and do you do them both on the same day?
No, I don’t use Jr. AG. WWTB is formatted rather plainly for sure, but once you get into it it’s easy to follow…you just do the next thing on the page. But I understand where you’re coming from. I had the same first impression. 🙂
We spend about 30-45 minutes on both books combined, but my son is completing more than one lesson a day in Language Lessons. Most of LL days are very short. A few are longer (such as writing a story after doing a picture study). The lessons in WWTB vary as well. Some days are short (maybe 15 minutes), some are longer (30+). Of couse much depends on the age of the child and how fast they can work. Basically, I just stop my son after 45 minutes, because I know from experience when he starts to mentally wear out. I look ahead a little and plan so he doesn’t have a long assignment from both books on the same day.
