What is recommended for language arts? We are just starting and I am not sure about how to teach this. Any other links of info would be helpful I am still learning about CM and SCM methods.

    Thank you,

    Sam

First, a couple of clarification questions for you, Sam. 🙂

What do you mean by “language arts”? What subjects would you consider to be included in that category; for example, spelling? What else?

    What grade level(s)?

    Thanks!

My girls are 10 and 11…in school they would be grade 4 and 6, but I will combine their level and thought I would start CM using level 4. Good level to start??

I said language arts but maybe I should say grammer. 🙂 I purchased Spelling Wisdom Book 2 and we started using it for copywork and spelling… what else is recommended for grammer?

    Thanks,

    Samantha

    Ah, grammar. OK.

Spelling Wisdom is designed for spelling and can be used for copywork, yes.

You are right that your children are old enough to start grammar now. I like Junior Analytical Grammar, which is a quick introduction to the parts of speech and a little diagramming. You can read some discussions about it here:

I just wanted to add I got to meet in person the author of Junior Analytical Grammer and I loved her. Also the books. They were at the homeschool conference here and she really know what she was doing.

    Samantha,

I’ve used Growing with Grammar and loved the simplicity of it. It is written to the student, which I like. I’ve used grades 1 & 2 (young for grammar, I know), I haven’t yet looked at the older grades, but I think it goes through 6th grade.

    Blessings,

We are using KISS Grammar and love it. I wrote some info about it here:

However, the site has been known to confuse many so as a newcomer, you may want to try JAG (Junior Analytical Grammar). It’s scripted to the student and may be easier for you to follow.
