Hello all! I haven’t posted in ages, but was hoping for some advice. 🙂 My oldest (12) has struggled with reading and writing. We have spent a lot of time focusing on her phonics, fluency and writing skills. She is at grade level, but our journey isn’t over.

Because of her struggles, we chose not to introduce a 2nd language. My thinking was that it could possibly cause confusion. She has been asking to learn a 2nd language now, however, and I am still hesitant. Half of me wants to follow her lead, but the other half is concerned it will confuse her. She isn’t begging for a 2nd language and I don’t think she’d be distraught if I held off or anything, but I do like that she’s interested and I’d like to follow up on that interest….but I don’t want to toss out all our hard work. What do you think – should I go ahead and try a 2nd language with her? And if so, which one?

What is she interested in learning?  Have you considered sign language?

She dabbled with sign language (based on a book she read) but hasn’t shown interest in going further with it. She says she’d like to try Spanish.

What about something like Getting Started With Spanish?  I think it only takes a few minutes a day and is very inexpensive.

I think you should definitely jump on her interest in this area. You might choose something like Duolingo. It’s free online and simple. She could just work on it for 15 minutes a day or so.

I would go with the language she is most interested in.

Thanks! I’ve been researching Spanish and ASL. Our library has lots of DVD ASL courses, so I borrowed a few and am going to see what the kids think and go from there. 🙂
