Labeling Map

  • My children are still younger (8, 7 and 5) and they are still learning to write well.  When labeling a map, my oldest (have not tried with other two) is not able to write small enough on the map in order to label all the countries.  So what I have done is to label the map with numbers and on a corresponding page, I have the countries listed and they write the correct number by the country name.

I would love for them to label the map themselves and thus write out the country names.

    Any suggestions?

I don’t have my kids write it until at least 4th grade (if they can at least write somewhat smallish).  For my 7yo, I have her just point to them.  We do it all orally at this point.  We’ll look at a map with it written on there, and we’ll talk about it – and then we switch to a blank one and she points out as many places as she can.  Once they are able to actually write decently and small enough to manage, then they do.  I haven’t decided yet with my 9yo if I will have spelling count – she just started dictation, and she was a late reader, so I think it would be unfair at this point – but for my 10yo spelling definitely counts.

I have done the numbering and labeling (esp. for Europe) and that is fine. Currently we’re using SCM’s Visits to Africa and my dd6 writes the first letter of each country’s name and then I finish for her. She outlines and colors the maps and also completes the detailed maps as listed, but I do the writing.

I’m using Visits to Mideast and in the back is a sheet w/ names of the countries that you can cut out and the child can place them in the correct space instead of writing them. My 7yodd has a main map that she is coloring in each country we learn (not the blank map) and then for the drill she uses the cut out pieces.

We use abbreviations – sometimes just the first letter of the name. And mine are 9yo, 7yo (5yo and 4yo tagging along).

Could you label the map with the numbers and then have numbered lines on another page and have them write the names, instead of having then out a number next to the name? That way they are still practicing spelling the counties and their hand writing?

I believe that they are to outline or color the particular country on the map and discuss (name) it when they are young, then move into labeling when they are able. I would think a good transition might be the numbers or to color and name the area and then copy the spelling on another page or a board. Eventually, they would be able to identify the country and spell it correctly in that way. But it’s a little more interactive for you.
