DS will be 3rd grade in the fall. I was just reading in the curriculum guide about LA recommendations and wanted to hear what others did. This year we are doing print copywork, oral narration, and learning cursive 3/week with me supervising. He is enjoying cursive and it is going well.

I was looking at Spelling Wisdom, and also the Hymns in Prose copybook. Is it appropriate to stop doing print copywork and do spelling wisdom 2/week and hymns in prose 2-3/week? He will be 8.

If it were me, I would do cursive daily.  I would do transcription using Spelling Wisdom 2x a week ( allowing my child to print).  I would not also do hymns in prose.  I can’t remember if Hymns in Prose is printing or cursive.  I would wait until cursive instruction is complete and then use Hymns in Prose in place of cursive.

That is a good suggestion from Missy.  Cursive instruction and print copywork were done in the same year, each daily at different times of the day to vary the subjects.  And the next year they do cursive copywork.  We did SW in grade 4 with dictation and he prefers it in printed for learning spellings.  My dc did Draw Write Now books for print copywork as the drawing or coloring activities help with handwriting skills.  Also cutting and pasting help.  And the Draw and Write Through History.  I have a nice keepsake book of my son’s drawings in a primary journal with the top blank and the bottom half lined for writing.

For third grade, my daughter did similar to what your child is doing now.  Near the end of third grade, she began doing some of her copywork in cursive and occasionally wrote a narration (she enjoys writing).

In fourth grade (9years old), I require all school work to be written in cursive.  That was also the requirement when I taught fourth grade language arts in a private school.

In other words, third grade was a transition year from print to cursive.  She began learning cursive in second and mastered it in third.

We used Spelling Wisdom for copywork in third grade.  I think using it for dictation is usually recommended for fourth grade and up, unless you sense your student is ready for dictation.  You may have to just try it to see…
