DD is 5.5 and we are doing kindy. She loves reading and writing and does well with them. She hates math and really struggles with it. We are trying to do lots of hands-on manipulative stuff, and I just feel like we are not on the same page. Should I just wait, or try other approaches? She has made a lot of progress with puzzles since we started working on them and finished a 60 piece puzzle today. She does like card games like go fish, war, etc. She does great with numeral recognition, but seems to have no clue what the numbers really represent.

I’d wait. I learned that the hard way. With my oldest I thought I had to keep him on “schedule,” and he often had horrible tantrums b/c I pushed him too hard. He still struggles with math, and I can’t help but think that my pushing him had something to do with it. On the other hand, I waited for signs of readiness in my daughter. While we are still moving slowly, I think she will do better b/c I followed her lead.

I’d wait too.  It is a developmental thing, and she just might not be ready.

CM advocated waiting for any formal schooling until the child is 6.  You have plenty of time.  If she likes to do the other things, and asks for them, that’s fine.  But if she’s balking at something, I wouldn’t force her.

At that age, I would call puzzles and old maid, gold fish etc. “math”. These games are similar to RightStart math card games and will prepare her for it if you go that route later. I started my dd (#2 child) with teddy bear math from Rainbow Resource. You could also use pattern blocks with patternables book templates and/or tangrams with tangrammables book templates. These are fun math introductions. Also, if you use the computer any, starfall has some math games along with phonics and reading. It is ad free. Some of the site is free and some is $35/year per family. We have liked it.

Wait! 🙂 there is a book called Math Games for Learning that makes math fun. But I wouldn’t push her.
