I am wondering if any of you know of a good resource for testing kindergarten readiness? My sister’s 4 year old has a late August b-day and will be attending traditional school this fall. My sister wants to go with a Young 5s class and her husband wants to go with kindergarten, feeling Y5’s is equal to being “held back”. I studied education in college and have been homeschooling my 9, 7, and 4 year olds for five years now and I would say my niece would benefit from Y5s (I called my 7 year olds first year Y5’s as she turned 5 the second week of Sept). That being said, I want to be respectful of their choice and their marriage so I was thinking a readiness test they could look at to determine for themselves which would be best might be helpful without me expressing my opinion. Her preschool teacher is being pretty non-commital at this point as to which class she would recomend. Any ideas?
I think K readiness is more about maturity and I don’t know of a test for that. I was good friends with several of my K teachers and they all said that they wished the cut-off date was moved back to July 1st. Children born late July and August were way behind the others on maturity. They cried more often and were less capable of doing things for themselves. In a classroom with 25-30 children the teachers cannot tie each shoe or wipe any bottoms, so it makes thier job harder to have children not ready.
