Quick question… Can anyone recommend a program for kindergarten art instruction?  No construction paper throw-aways right?  Oh and I also wondered which handicrafts you would recommend for a 6 year-old-boy?  Thanks!

My four and six year old have had great success with Sharon Hofer’s Creating a Masterpiece dvd program.  They have produced beautiful works of art that are hanging in our home.  It teaches children how to create fine art – so no artist appreciation and definitely way beyond crafting.  It’s a program you’d enjoy doing with him and could use again when he is older.

Oh wow, thanks!  I had looked at it but wasn’t sure what ages it was for.  Would you suggest buying 1 level per year?

My daughter is enjoying Artistic Pursuits this year.  They have a variety of grade levels.

We did Artistic Pursuits last year with 1st and PreK and had a lot of fun. Planning on the next book in the fall and repeating when the young one gets older. The big kids will have fun making the projects again at an older age I am sure

You could do one level per year, but it depends on how much time your child spends on each lesson.  Most lessons are designed to take an hour, but sometimes with my girls, we’d stretch it out because they’d want to spend more time, but we always tried to stop at around the hour mark.  I’m also not as diligent as I should be in doing our weekly courses (as opposed to daily things) so for us four a year is a good number.  Also – the pencil drawing one is a bit detailed, so I wouldn’t start with it, but we did great with the pastels (both levels) and the sculpting and have friends that have done the painting with their little ones and colored pencil with a son the same age as yours.

We LOVE Artistic Pursuits!!! The lessons are fun, the concepts are real, the materials used are proper art supplies, and they have made wonderful art gifts from some of the lessons.
