I have a kindergartener and a 2yo. My day is looser than what I would like, but until I can figure out how to get the 2yo more involved, it will have to do. Here it is:
Sometime around 8:00 (again, if he sleeps late, it may be 8:30 before we start. This morning he was interested in play doh at 7:15, so I started then) we read the Bible, occasionally a nursery rhyme (I try for at least 3 days a week), and books either from the library or pre-selected from my stash. I usually have to stop at least once to correct the 2yo or remind the 5yo to share book time with her. After 30-40 min we take a break for the rest of the morning. He can use the computer or play with his cars, play doh, etc. Dd likes play doh, her play kitchen, coloring books, and puzzles during this time. Most days we resume after lunch with a few minutes of a math manipulative or worksheet, phonics flashcards or an easy book, and handwriting. If everything goes smoothly, it will take 15-20 min. I wait until after lunch so that dd will be napping, but it doesn’t always happen. Today she didn’t nap and I had to work around her. At least I can give her crayons or chalk, but I still have to keep my eye on her. Otherwise it’s magic eraser time. On Mondays I have to be at work right after lunch, so I move the math and reading to around 9:30 or 10 and skip the handwriting. Sometimes on my afternoon off we do art, but I’m not consistent with that. Outdoor playtime varies due to the weather and time constraints, but is after we have had school either in the morning (like this morning), or after the afternoon session before we go to the babysitter.
As for what I’m using:
Bible-currently using Penny Gardner’s list of readings and The Living Bible (older version). This is after trying the Gardner list with NKJV and NIV and two Bible story books. He became interested in the LB about two weeks ago and it’s working fine so far.
Reading-library books and my personal stash.
Phonics-it’s not phonics per se. I found some printable word family cards at specialed.about.com which I’m using quite well. To my surprise he was skimming through the kindergarten words when we first started. We’re on first grade words right now. He also uses the starfall.com website sometimes and has the computer game Curious George Learns Phonics (mostly review for him; very basic stuff)
Math-no set curriculum. I was using our state standards as a guide, but he had already met most of them when we started, and some of it I’m not sure is necessary. We use M&Ms and an occasional worksheet from dltk.com, kidzone.ws, or donnayoung.org. He also plays the games from the Curious George section of pbskids.
Music-not consistent in this area. If he wants to listen to a Cedarmont Kids video or listen to a kids’ song CD, I let that count. Dd and I have a hymn time when I’m trying to get her to take a nap, but it’s mostly Amazing Grace and Victory in Jesus.
Art-when we do art (it’s been more than a month), I use something from dltk or let him use stencils or watercolors freestyle.
HTH,
Karen
