I am looking for a vacuum that my kids can use easily. Ages: very strong 5 year old – 10 year old. My perfect vacuum would do stairs, get pet hair out of carpet, do wood floors decently (not top priority) and be lightweight and manuverable for kids. Is that too much to ask? 🙂 Suggestions?

I can tell you only that our favorite is the Dyson. I know the price is top. But the quality is also top. My kids all have used it (well the 5 yr old needs help getting it down the stairs) but the hoses are so long once I get it down he can use the wands to get the stairs all the way up. They move easy, pick up on carpet and wood and you don’t have to switch any levers. I love the Dyson and would suggest it to anyone. We had our going on 10 years!

My last Hoover was heavy to push, this one is a breeze to push and my 8 year old easily vacuums with it – the younger set can do the stairs with the separate canister vacuum and I also like that the upright selfadjusts for wood floors. The reviews said it’s great for pet hair, but we do not have a pet. I would NOT get it if you have lots of shaggy type carpet – that’s what we have in the basement and the suction on this is SO strong that it is difficult to push through the thick carpet – on all my “normal” carpet it’s a dream.
The only thing I do not like about it, is because it comes with the separate canister vac – they did not create a hose attachment for the upright and sometimes if I see something in the window sill or along the edge of the fireplace, I don’t want to have to get out a separate vacuum to get those things. But it is SO light for carrying between the floors of my house that I really don’t think that one drawback would keep me from purchasing it again.
I’ve seen it go on sale for $239 and if you can find it at a major store for that price, BEst Buy will match it and if they’re doing free shipping you can have it sent right to your home.

PS – If you go for a Dyson you might want to find out what specific type Misty has. I did NOT like the one I borrowed at all. I felt it was heavy to push, I was not impressed with the suction and I also felt like the attachments for doing the stairs were very stiff and definitely too short to reach the top of my staircase, maybe if I had borrowed Misty’s I would have gone with one!

Mine is the older version. But I was just vising my friend who has the new purple one on a ball and she loves it. My kids played with it and they liked it a lot. The ball is a bit weird at first by after 15 minutes we all got the hang of it.

Not necessarily easy, cheap so therefore not always practical, but we have a central vacuum system in our house. We plug the hose into wall outlets and the unit is in the garage. We’ve had these in all of our homes actually. They work wonderfully well and are easy for all ages.
If I were buying a regular vacuum, I’d buy an Orek for carpet. They are lightweight and work well. I’d then buy a dust mop swiffer type thing for wood.
I’ve used several Dyson vacuums over the years and honestly, they felt cheaply made and did not work well.
Just my 2 cents.

Our last vacuum was an Oreck. It was over 10 years old when we got it, and I used it for about 5 years. It was lightweight (8 lbs. I think) and very easy for my kids to use. We were planning to buy a new one, but after shopping the local vacuum store, we decided on a Simplicity Freedom. It is also lightweight, very durable, and it’s made in the USA. It will actually propel itself if you let it go after turning it on…my kids get a big kick out of it. :0). It works really well on carpet, and this model works fairly well on wood floors. So for us, Oreck or Simplicity have been winners.
