Has anyone watched this? If so, would it be appropriate for elementary aged kids? (Not too graphic or violent?)

I have seen it, and it is exellent – but I think there are some scenes that are graphic. It is definitely intended for adults. I would preview it to see if you think your kids could handle the content. If nothing else, by watching it yourself you could add a lot to your history study!

There were some very graphic pictures, many pictures of fields full of dead and injured men, talk of amputating limps, pictures of starving men from the war camps, etc. And there was a lot of, what we consider, inappropriate language. (Lots of using God’s name in vain, and other off color words – all taken straight from the pages of soilders journals.) I would recommend previewing it before letting your children see it.

I agree with what has already been said. I watched this series (well, we will finish it next week) with my 10th and 8th graders, and they enjoyed it because it fit so well with their readings from this time period. It really helped further develop their understanding of the Civil War. But, it is not something I think younger children (ie, elementary age) would enjoy–it can be rather dry and “wordy” and sometimes gruesome, but it is extremely well done. Hope that helps with your decision!
