I have a KOTF catalog in front of me. I’m looking at pages 39-42 under Juniors (ages 8-10) readers section. We’ve never read any of these titles except the Miller Family series. My question is, can you recommend any for my 10 yo ds to read on his own? They all look appealing but I’d like first hand experience/thoughts since there are so many titles.
We are new to KOTF, so I’d love to hear your favorite books listed in their “Keepers Family Reading Bookshelf” (page 35-58) that you’ve read & enjoyed. What do you recommend? We have 3yo, 10yo and 15 yo – all boys.
Also, how do they compare to Lamplighters, which we absolutely LOVE?
I wish I could answer your question Heather! I just ordered my KOF catalog and was browsing through the website. I would love to hear some suggestions also.
I was thinking of using the Contenders for the Faith for my two boys (almost 8yrs and 9yrs). Does anyone have any feedback on those?
I would trust any books by the same authors. Also, there are some books in the KOF catalog that exist in the Children’s Character Builder’s Collection, I have that collection and can recommend them; though not all these for a boy’s interest. also from Vision Forum and Grace and Truth books (presented here):http://www.graceandtruthbooks.com/product/the-childrens-character-building-collection-set-of-11-titles
I would trust the Alden series of books, the ones more “boyish” or depending on your sons’ taste; there seem to be different ones for different ages too, so that would be up to you. When mine were little, they read as first readers the G-d is Good Series and Say it Again Series, and some of the Little Jewel Books, Locust Story and Caterpillar Green.
Heather, I am no help but I am also interested in feedback about the KOTF books.
Which books of the Lamplighter books do you recommend? I have a 10 year old son also and have always looked at these books but never broke down to buy any.
All of Heather’s selections are wonderful, but you really can’t go wrong with Lamplighter. I’ve read 18-20 of them (perhaps more now) and I’ve never been disappointed! More great choices, especially for boys:
The Giant Killer
Fire in the Sky
Throw Me Overboard
The Captive
Personally, my all time favorite books are Ishmael, Self-Raised and The Hidden Hand – all Lamplighters.
I recommend requesting a catalog and go through them according to age. I check them off as I buy them. They generally cross gender lines, too. You won’t be disappointed. Plus, you can pick according to character traits taught. In additiion to the previous ones mentioned, “Jessica’s First Prayer” and it’s sequel were very moving here as well as “Little Threads”. They’re wonderful! We’re reading 4-6 as read-alouds this year.
I believe the best price you’re going to get is at Christianbook.
