  • OK well I am just flummoxed that I have not read Kate Seredy’s books. How can this be?? So after seeing the other thread, I checked my library system and they only have 3…not the ones that were being discussed, but it sounds like at least a few of you like just about all of her books. So my library system has The Good Master, The White Stag, and The Singing Tree. Are these as wonderful as her others? Any recommendation on what to start with? And would they make better read alouds or read alones?

Read The Good Master, then The Singing Tree.  Read the Good Master anytime; The Singing Tree can be profitably read if you are near WWI in time (or any time too–it is a sequel to The Good Master.)  Yes, they are fabulous, Seredy is an amazing author.  You really can’t go wrong.  The White Stag is sort of a retelling of the myths surrounding the Magyars’ coming to Hungary.  I love it too, think it’s beautiful, but it’s a little more unusual

The Good Master is autobiographical. She is spoiled Kate in the book sent to live in the country.
