If you have used these books, how did you use them? How often? How many years? What grades are they best for? Please tell me what you liked or didn’t like.
I don’t have them do much grammar before age 10. I am having him do Grammarland for 5th grade and he did Writing Tales before that. I am trying to put together a long term grammar and writing plan.
retrofamParticipantI use Simply Grammar starting around 2nd or 3rd grade depending on how well the child is reading. I stop and set it aside when it gets too difficult, and wait for maturity.
My current plan is to use it for 2-4, and start Winston Grammar in grade 5.
Laura.boraParticipantWe have story starters. I haven’t found a way I like to use them in our homeschool, but I do use them for our co-op in the creative writing class I teach. I’m able to use it with 3rd graders and up in a co-op setting.
BenitaParticipantI assign Story Starters for my children around age 10. One per week. They may choose any one they want. I don’t correct grammar/punctuation. We use it as a way to get them writing creatively. It has been a help for two of my children who cannot begin with a blank page.
Simply grammar I use around 4-5th grade as a simple overview. I really like the easy style. It has worked well for us.
TristanParticipantI have Story Starters and have used it two ways:
1. Assign a child to read and complete in written form one story. I’ve only done this occasionally with Makayla, she likes it for a change of pace.
2. Read one aloud to a child and ask them to take over and tell what happens next. This is fun and can be done with younger children too.
BenitaParticipantI like Tristan’s idea of having a younger child finish the story verbally!
