Just now my daughter, almost 6, came and showed me a nature journal entry that she just did all on her own volition. She went outside, gathered a few fall leaves, and came back in to sketch one in her nature journal. Then she added the sentence “I saw 2 leaves” – original writing there too (she did ask me how to spell saw and leaves). Love it! We’ve sort of had fits and starts trying to get in to the nature study groove so to see her CHOOSE to do a nature journal entry of her own choice on a Saturday – not just because that was our ‘school activity’ for that day really tickled me. And I love that it is giving her the motivation to start trying to write original thoughts on her own as well.
Just thought I’d share in case anyone else gets discouraged trying to get in to doing nature study sometimes as well.
Jen those are the moments when we know it is all worth while. That is so great, I love that.
Have not been on as my daughter broke her nose riding last Saturday and then on Monday, same daughter rushed to hospital with acute appendicitis and had them removed there and then. I have been busy caring for her as she is super sore, and the fact that she has other GI issues made the surgery a bit more complex. Life is never dull, but the moment you describe above makes every second good and bad worth it. Linda
Awesome! We did our first nature study this past Wednesday and it went over pretty well. The best part was my oldest (14) wanted to know if she could draw whenever she felt like it in her notebook! I told her of course and that I’d buy her a new one when she filled it up. BTW, Joann’s (fabric store) has a nice basic one for $5.99 and I used my 40% off coupon to get them for the kids; I think they had 90 pages and were 9″x12″ if I recall correctly. Now I need to get myself one because I had only a clipboard and paper.
Wonderful. My kids love to go on adventures and collect treasures to draw and learn more about. We go on nature walks on the weekends, too. It is great!
