Just starting with Spelling Wisdom. I have a few questions.

I am excited to be using Spelling Widsom, I have coveted it for a long time! My 10 year old is wonderful at writing stories, he has beautiful handwriting but his spelling is terrible!  Yesterday was our first day with it using Book One. My son had plenty of practice, I knew the word “ought” may be a bit of a challenge. He was spelling it aloud, writing it on paper and getting it right when praticing. When I dictated it he started to spell “ought” wrong but caught himself and erased it before I could cover it up, however he spelled it wrong again, but once again he caught it himself and he then wrote it correctly. Is this OK? Should I be making him stop so I can cover it up right away or allow him to fix it because he recognized for himself that it was incorrect? I still had him write the word at the side 3 more times  just to be sure. Today we were doing the second exercise. The title was, A Proverb on Safety. My son wrote; A Proverb FOR Safety. I didn’t say anything until the end because he did spell the word “for” correctly although it was the wrong word. Should I have covered it up? Also when I dictated the sentence, “Better safe than sorry.”,  he started to tell me I read it wrong and that it should be “Better to be safe than to be sorry.” He was determined that I was wrong. So there was a discussion about him writing what I say, the way I say it, I was right, he was wrong! I ended up repeating the sentence, which I know we’re not supposed to do. I am just looking for some thoughts or suggestions from some of you moms who are more experienced than I am with using Spelling Wisdom. Is what I did OK?

I must say my son certainly likes Spelling Wisdom. We spent alot of time looking through it together and talking about how to use it. He spent the last 2 years in school and despised spelling because he just couldn’t get it. Memorizing a list of words just didn’t work for him. I am so thankful we could return to homeschooling and go back to a Charlotte Mason Education. I really think this is going to be great for him! I am also using it for my 11 year old who is great at spelling but despises writing! I started him a little further on in the book and he too is enjoying it. I find him reading it after school time!

For us, I do not cover up incorrect words as my DD writes. It distracts her and upsets her. I can not really blame her, if I am in “the zone” and told I did something wrong it can fluster me. 🙂

So what we do… after the dictation I ask her to read it outloud to me. She often hears or sees the misspelled word or missed comma (or similar) when reading outloud. If she just scans it quietly she will scan over the incorrect word.

So far it is working really well.

A big, warm welcome to the forum, Julie.  My son and I really like SW too.

I don’t make a big deal of it.  I start off reading the full passage.  Then I read a part and wait and read more and wait.  They are longer now though.  When he is finished I grade it with the correction and have him practice the word the next day.  I don’t think he looks back at his words, so I think waiting to correct works for us.

We use a spiral notebook.  At each two page spread, he does copywork transcription on the left side and practices writing new words and we discuss the passage meaning and grammar.  That is day 1.  On day 2, he looks it over to study it and then he does his dictation on the right side of the two page spread, so when folded back, he does not see his copywork, but it is easy for him to compare when finished if he wants to.

Oh, and I think it is good he was able to catch his own spelling error and correct it himself!  Yay!

Thanks for the responses. My son has definitely been getting frustrated when I cover a word while he is writing. So I have been waiting and having him read through it at the end and he does see the errors himself.

Now with my older son, he is just writing from memory before I even start dictating! Guess we need to move to longer passages!
