Hi. I am getting ready to ease my 7 yo boy into the Charlotte Mason style, but I am suddenly very confused. I had found the site “Ambleside Online” and I thought I was understanding, but I also like this site alot and it is very different!

    – does anyone use both sites, or do you have to choose one?

    – My son is OFFICIALLY going to be in 3rd grade in Sept (although we are about 2 1/2 because our 1st year went badly!). Do I start with Year 1 (or is it Module 1??)

    – My son has ADHD, which is one reason I want to try CM (short lessons). Anyone else deal with this?

    – It sounds a bit easy….what am I missing???

I also have a 4 year old (5 in Oct)

    Thank you for your help!!

    Hi Gina,

I am very new too, so I will just reply to what I know 🙂

If you were to use Ambleside, you would start in Year 1 for your son.

I too have just found this website and curriculum and I really like what I have seen. My son just turned 7 and we were trying to do Year 1 with Ambleside, but some of the books just weren’t that interesting to him, which is understandable when we really are just starting and have not been reading the type of books that are listed with Ambleside.

So, I am probably going to make up my own curriculum combining this website and Ambleside to the books that I think will fit well for my family.

I hope this is of some help,

    Crystal

I remember how I felt when I started using CM 6 years ago. It can be very scary. I would recommend the guide here and the books because they have all been “road tested” and are a bit more engaging than some of the recommendations from AO. I used AO first and found some of the choices bombed because they were just too grown up for a 6 year old IMHO.

If you wanted to get a feel for the method you could use books from http://www.mainlesson.com or its hardcopy counterpart http://www.yesterdaysclassics.org . This site has books catagorized by age and that really helps. I would pick one of the nature books by Thorton Burgess or Clara Pierson (something like that anyway)and get started practicing narration. My four year old likes a Burgess set we got from Amazon, but I digress….:) Nature books are both fun and interesting to little boys. You could then try a chapter or two of the history books. I like Mara Pratt. This would help you get a feel for everything before spending money.

Narration is the HUGE thing. Small chunks are best. Really small sections. 🙂 It is better to be too easy than too hard at first. This is so very foundational and so you really cannot spend too much time on it. After that I would add in copywork. I’ll tell you how I do it. For a boy that age I just set a timer for 5 minutes and show them the part of the page on which to start copying. I tell him to copy as neatly and accurately as possible. At first it may be only part of a sentence, later it can be much more. Then I gradually increase the time as it becomes easier.

I should mention that you can add ANY book into the SCM organizer. I often add things. It is also easier to go one or two books at a time and helpful to have a few reviews from moms in the trenches. This has saved me some money by avoiding books that were too hard. boring, etc.

    Gina,

I wanted to recommend a book by Sonya. You can get it free here http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/education-is/

This will help you get an idea of CM and how you can use it in your home. I would also recommend that you look at the guide. Yes, many of us pick and choose what works for us. Then there are those that are 100% and use everything from one site. It all depends on our family and what God wants for our children. You will need to spend time in prayer, talking with you husband and checking out each site and finding what is best for your family.

Ask questions as you need and pray.
