7yo dd and I were out picking up the toys in the yard tonight at dusk when we heard crackling noises under the leaves. It sounded like bugs or toads, so we went in and collected a flashlight and my oldest dd. We were very patient, watching the leaves, when finally we saw one move that wasn’t caused by the wind. Watched and waited some more, and finally saw something poking up between the leaves. But it was fast! As we waited patiently and got better at spotting them, we realized they were nightcrawlers! The girls finally caught one, went to put it in a bucket, and went back out to get more. Don’t have a clue how many they actually found and collected, but they had a great time! We treated it as a mystery – “what’s making that sound?” – and they had so much fun looking, watching, and waiting.
Just had to share!
