HI! I am considering switching to SCM. Would be using it for 4 kiddos 7, 8, 10 and 11. I just started a new curriculum in January but SCM seems so much easier and I love the nature study aspect. I have been listening to Laying Down the Rails DVD series and went to a curriculum event last night and 2 of the moms were using SCM. I would start w Genesis. I am a bit concerned with starting something new again..Any words of advice or encouragement? I like the fact that for K-12, all the kids do subjects together too. And SCM guidees are so reasonable..how easy is it to find books at the library?
I think it’s rather easy to find the books at the library. But then, we live in a rural area, where grandparents and some parents may have read these books as children.
I have found lots of the books at used book sales and through bookfinder.Com and abebooks.com.
Did you download the samples & the resources needed list? You can probably check your library’s holdings online.
SCM has been the easiest curriculum to implement for us. My kids are a little more spread out age wise (12yo down to 15mo), but I love having them together for as many subjects as possible. I can’t imagine having them each doing their own science, Bible, history, etc.
Many of the books are available at the library. There are only some at our library, but it has a much larger system that we can check out books from. When I factor that in, there are usually only a few that I can’t find. The books I’m often unable to get are Christian ones like The True Story of Noah’s Ark or Life in the Great Ice Age. I also like the buy them used from Amazon. Many are only a few cents (plus $4 shipping) so it can save us quite a bit of money there. For the older kids, many are available on Kindle for free.
I would advise you to start slowly. Don’t add all the subjects at once. There are so many extras that you can easily get overwhelmed. Also, don’t plan more curriculum or books than you can realistically fit into your schedule. There are so many good programs out there and it’s so easy to want to do it all! I like to keep a list of what I’m planning for the coming year. That helps keep me from overbuying books and curriculum.
