My daughter is starting CM this fall into the 7th grade and I was wondering where on this site I can find books she can read to get her ready for the fall semester? We will be doing Medieval in the fall too. Also I was wondering if you can recommend any great adventuresome book series for girls (7-9th level) for summer reading. Thanks!
I’m not sure of anything she would need to read to prepare for the semester. If you are new to CM, you may want to read the SCM posts suzukimom posted on this thread:
I wonder if there is anyone out there who can relate to my situation. We have been homeschooling since 1992. We started when our oldest son was starting second grade. We have 6 boys and two girls. I have done my own curriculum planning, used Konos, had my kids in an umbrella school (Clonlara)and done several years of unit studies. Our youngest daughter is 12 and I have been in burnout mode for over a year. My adult children all urge me to stick it out but I am having a hard time. I love what I know about Charlotte Mason and unknowingly have done much of what she taught. Are there any veteran homeschooling moms out there who have hit a wall like this?
I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I am not a ‘vet’ like you – I have been homeschooling 7 years – but I have definitely hit walls in my motivation and willingness to continue at times.
Honestly, part of what is so wonderful about the CM method is that it creates an atmosphere where much of the kids’ learning is done without your constant supervision! I find that during the times I am low on energy or feeling burned out, if I can pull out some interesting books for my independent readers, leave the art books on the coffee table, turn on a classical cd every few days, and take lots of nature time together, I am very quickly rejuvenated and so are the kids.
I don’t think it is the learning that burns us out…I think it is the weight of thinking that everything they learn has to come through us! Charlotte believed that our job was to get the kids directly in touch with great ideas through great books – and to get out of the way :). That is hard to do sometimes, but I would say the fact that your older kids are urging you to continue is proof that you did an excellent job teaching them to love learning.
Hi, Tina and welcome to the forum! I’m excited to see you here!
All of us have hit discouragement/burnout more than once to some degree or another. I have great motivational CDs of Cindy Rushton’s that I got from a great friend here on the forum and have been listening to them this week. I am feeling excited again to start! I was planning on sharing them with you.
I am in planning stages for my 12 and 13 yo dd and am asking if you are interested in coming over to get your dd’s plan going? We’ve discussed before but not in great detail…. =)
Welcome Tina. Have you ever been to a live hs convention? I am into my 5th year but find the convention to motivate and encourage me and give me new ideas to get excited all over again. I have also hit walls and push through to a short revival break before going on. Are you a part of a local hs group? I hope you stick around here. These ladies are very encouraging and there are many great ideas here. Hugs.
Thank-you for the words of encouragement. Many times over the years I have offered such to beginning homeschoolers. I do love the opportunity homeschooling provides for our children to learn some self-motivation skills and have seen my daughter step up to the challenge of having a burnt-out teacher/mom!
Wings, about 10 years ago we relocated and left a very active group and homeschooling area. I have , in times past, gone to the hs conventions and they were always a real shot in the arm. There is quite a lot of traveling involved to attend now.
Perhaps it’s time to revisit the idea of forming a group here….sheraz…..?
