Junior Naturalist Study

I’d love to put together a junior naturalist type of program to enhance science this fall for my 8 year old daughter.  She loves all things nature.  It isn’t hard to find naturalist materials, but I haven’t found anything geared toward kids and I feel that a lot of what I have found would be over her head.  I do have Hours in the Out-of-Doors, which is helpful, but not exactly what I’m looking for as far as how to organize a program for her.  I guess I’m looking for a guide, season by season, that I can tailor nature study in our particular area, in which I can organize information but it’s not just a nature journal.  I hope that makes sense!  Any suggestions?

I don’t know if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but one thought that comes to mind is the topical and seasonal nature study guides from Shining Dawn Books. (Shining Dawn Books dot com.) I haven’t actually used any, but I’ve looked at them many times. The SCM Journaling in Nature is also arranged by season, I believe.

I know what you mean by tailoring it to your area. We are in Southern CA, so anything that involves snow or very cold weather doesn’t work for us here, as well as most things having to do with leaves changing color. Sigh…. 🙂

Thank you, I’ll check into that!  We’re on the plains, but I grew up in forested areas.  When I see nature materials that include big trees and streams, I get a little jealous.  There’s only so much you can do with grass and prairie dogs.  😉

Natural Science Through the Seasons by James Partridge is a great book.  It has tons of units organized by season.  Some units have quotes and poems.  Each unit gives several different activities to do with children.

That looks really great too!  I’m reading through the first part of Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study and it’s super helpful.  I’ve had the book for a while, not sure why I haven’t used it like this.  Maybe I’ve found it intimidating?!

Has anyone planned their science curriculum to correlate with their nature study, or is it better to keep the two separate?
