We have done Apologia since the beginning. I am a bit off track though, from what they are recommending for JR High. I am hoping you can help me re-figure my plan. This year, we did Human Body, and my DD is in 7th. Technically, she SHOULD have done General Science. My question is, do I just do Physical Science next year, which is what is recommended for 8th, or will she be lost not having done General Science? Wondering what your experiences might be with either of these?
We did some of General in 7th grade, we only finished a little over half of it and instead of finishing, we just started Physical in 8th grade. My son has had no issues, but he is strong academically.
Your child would probably be just fine going directly to Physical Science. With that said, it is my opinion that General Science is not a book to be skipped simply because Jay Wile lays such a great foundation for learning and studying science. He explains what science is and what it isn’t. He talks about how science changes over time and that things we believe to be set in stone might be changed tomorrow if there’s a new discovery. He runs through a timeline of famous scientists and their discoveries. My daughter enjoyed General Science, to my great surprise. If you’re afraid of being behind, perhaps your daughter could just read the General Science text if you don’t want her to skip it all together.
I wouldn’t want to have skipped it. My kids aren’t going to be taking Physics, so I just did Physical Science in 9th grade. Then they still have plenty of time for Biology and Chemistry and maybe a bit of Advanced Bio their senior year. It has worked for us.
I decided after our first child went through General Science in 7th, to move it to 8th grade too. Our local high schools do Physical Science in 9th and that is what I did many moons ago, so I think it’s adequate to start then. Obviously different families have differing opinions, but that is just what works best for us. You should do the same – what works best for you!
We used Physical Science in 9th grade, Biology in 10th and Chemistry in 11th. My oldest also took Anatomy. We used all the elementary books and skipped General altogether and it was fine. They both got into the college of their choice and did well on their ACT’s. I wish the elementary Anatomy and Physics/Chemistry was available back then!
