I used the Junior Analytical Grammar with my 5th grader this year. I liked the idea of teaching grammar gently, because I had struggled so much with the past programs I had used. She has enjoyed it tremendously, but since she had used a more rigorous type program, she flew through the book and learned a lot. I didn’t realize she was only to cover half the book. Do you have a suggestion for what I can do next year with her? Is she too young to start the Senior version or is there an alternative program she could go through to keep her skills up while I wait a year for the AG?

    Thank you.

    Hi Rebecca,

I don’t believe there are any reinforcment workbooks for the JAG. If you start your daughter with AG in 6th grade, she will have some review and go into more detail. Also, with AG there will be reinforcments for her to do in the off seasons and after the three year course is complete.

If your daughter does nothing more for grammar this year except read good literature, do narrations and dictations, IMO she will be fine. 🙂 Most likely she will easily remember the concepts she learned in JAG and fly through AG as well.

Maybe someone else has more to add? 🙂

I agree with Heather. You could easily do just dictation, narration, and good literature next year and be fine. Another thing you could do is just select a passage that she will use for dictation and have her parse the sentences in it (if you feel comfortable enough to check it without an answer key). Since you do dictation only once or twice a week, a once-a-week parsing exercise would be plenty. In fact, many of Robin’s follow-up exercises for AG are done once every other week.

Now, technically, Robin (the author of AG and JAG) says you can start AG in 6th grade. So if you feel the need to keep going, you could dive in. But be sure to follow her three-year timeline for covering it! 😉
