On a Facebook page I follow a mother commented that her grown son was being passed over for a job because he did not have a diploma from an “accredited” school or his GED. I won’t go into their situation, but am curious to see if anyone here has faced/ heard or has thoughts as this could be a concern for any of our kids.
You hear about these kinds of things from time to time but they are few and far between. Sure, some of us may come across an employer or school that gives homeschooled kids a bit of a hard time but most homeschooled students have no problem going to college and getting jobs.
When my son was applying for his current job, I was a little nervous. I prayed that the Lord’s will would be done and that my son’s being homeschooled would not be a hindrance in this area but a blessing. Turns out that when my son told the man giving the interview that he had been homeschooled, the man said that he thought that was great! Turns out his grandkids are homeschooled. 🙂 He’s only been employed with this company for 1 year and he’s already received one promotion.
As a HS graduate (now HSing my kids) my siblings and I never had a problem getting a job with out a GED or accredited diploma. I don’t think I was even asked about my highschool education and on my resume I put the name of our homeschool. I don’t see how in an interview accrediation would even really come up. Only one college put up a bit of a stink, it was a community college, all the other schools just looked at our ACT or SAT scores and the transcript my mom created. The community college did not put up a stink for too long after my mom talked to them and they received a call from HSLDA 🙂
Hey there. I live in Ohio. I have currently been looking into the same thing because I have a special needs son and was told by his doctor that he will need to have a high school diploma in order to receive services as an adult.
When reading up on the homeschooling section on my states website, it said that parents can have a specially made diploma and the superintendent of the public school system will sign it, proving that your child has passed the highest grade in school. They do this specifically so they can get a job after graduation.
My only question is, will it work for receiving services for special needs? Its best to contact someone from your state regarding this issue. Someone who is able to answer all your questions.
Good luck!
