We bought Jacobs Geometry because of the good reviews it had. We are on chapter 2 and not liking it at all. We will continue to use it because buying a new textbook is not in our budget. My question is… does it get better?? It is a bunch of proofs, assumptions, contradictions, and indirect reasoning on weird things like molecules and athlete puzzles. AHHH I don’t remember doing that in high school.
I am willingly to buy the DVDs. Does the Dr. Callahan videos help enough to offset the price of the videos? I know for Foeresters algebra, we didn’t need the videos and definitely didn’t get our money’s worth out of them.
Thanks for any advice. As I said, we will stick with it, but it could be a miserable year 🙁
Overall, we were not completely pleased with Jacob’s Geometry. (I remembered my geometry being different.) We used the Callahan videos. The Callahan folks were very helpful. However, I felt like the material in Jacobs was kind of vague. The videos were chapter by chapter. For my student we need more of a lesson by lesson explanation.
For Algebra 2 we decided to switch to Math Without Boarders video and materials. My student has been pleased so far (we are on week 2).
I agree alone it can seem daunting. I used Derekowens.com he is wonderful for my two older boys when using Jacobs. You can request just the videos and workbook on his site by contacting him at half the cost of his other services of grading all of your kids work. You can just say you don’t need that part and they will prorate it. It was so worth it and my kids did really well with it. Might help in explanations because we didn’t seem to like the Callahan videos very well. 🙁 HTH 🙂
