Just curious for those that have used this if your children enjoyed it or not?  There aren’t any reviews on SCM (more of a discussion about age appropriateness) and a review on Amazon said it was a book full of rude and conceited bugs, that it was boring and rambling.  It’s just pretty expensive for a book we might not even like.

I was trying to decide to have my 6th and 4th grader do this independently, or do an Apologia Exploring Creation With.. book.

    Thanks!

My 11 yo son is just starting it.  He is on chapter 4.  He read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass before this.  He said it is like that, but these are real insects and not weird creatures.  I think he is liking it so far, but we are not much into it yet.  We are doing some of the Narration Notebook and books that go with it too for a 12 week period, 5 days per week including one day per week of nature study/notebook.  This seemed to me to be the best time of year to do it.

We did it this past year. It was alright. I wouldn’t rave about it. The premise is a little weird and many of the bugs are conceited. Sometimes they are funny though. We learned some things. I’d say it’s decent but not a must read. I prefer the Burgess bird and animal books though I think most books in this genre can seem slow in parts.

Anyone else have older elementary children?  What are they doing for science?

My 5th grade girl has been working through The Way Things Work along with the Engino Simple Machines kit.  I coordinated all the models in the Engino kit with the reading in TWTW.  She alternates between reading and building the models.  She has a little Moleskine that is her science notebook.  She writes in there each day telling what she did/built and what she learned.  On Friday evening, she reports to the family by reading through her writings for that week and showing us whatever model she has built while giving an explanation of how it works.  So far, so good.  The models are difficult and she has needed help on a couple of them.  Overall she likes it and she has learned quite a bit.

Jack’s Insects is next on our list, by the way.  I will couple it with the “Discovering Insects” kit from Home Science Adventures.

All of the Home Science Adventures kits are wonderful and can be done independently by older elementary students.  They are great for younger kids with help from mom.  Any of those with some living books added in would make a full semester at least.
