We’re reading it as a chapter book with the kids orally narrating and it’s working just fine. My kids love it and they are 9, 6 and 3. I love it, too! Sometimes they look into a field guide to see a color picture of what we’ve read about.

Jack’s Insects is a story and meant to be read as such. Might you have been thinking of Outdoor Secrets? It’s a collection of short stories that could be used in any order.

We absolutely loved JI and read it chapter by chapter during lunch.
